FACTS ABOUT NEW YORK
The State of New York is one of the states of the United States. It is located at the Mid – Atlantic and at the Northeastern sections of the country. New York which is more commonly known as NY is the country’s 3rd most populated state. It is bordered by the following states: Pennsylvania and New Jersey at its south, the states of Vermont, Connecticut and Massachusetts at its east side. It has a maritime border at the east of Long Island (Rhode Island) and an international border with Ontario and Quebec (Canadian provinces) at its northwest area.
New York City is the largest and the biggest city of the country is popularly known as the gateway for immigration to the America because of its prestigious status as a manufacturer, cultural, transportation and financial hub of the United States. The state is named after the Duke of York of the 17th century, James Stuart which later on was known as James II & VII of the countries Scotland and England.
The state was the very first state to:
- Preserve a historic site (the Washington’s Headquarters which was located at the Newburgh
- To established a state park which was the Niagara Reservation
- Declared the land as the “Forever Wild” (Adirondack and the Catskill forest preserves) within the state constitution

The touring jazz musicians were the one responsible with coining the term “The Big Apple” during the 1930s as they used the term as a slang expression for city or town. And so therefore, to play in New York City means that to play in The Big Apple.
Climate
In general, the state of New York has a very humid continental climate or from the Köppen climate classification, the state has a humid subtropical climate. Its weather is greatly influenced by the 2 continental air masses: the warm, humid that is from the southwest area and the cold, dry that is from the northwest regions. The cool and humid airflow that is from the North Atlantic also is a factor of the weather of the state.
Its winter season is a long and a cold having an average temperature of -13 °F (-25 °C) or even lower at the northern highlands of the state more particularly the Northern Plateau and about 5 °F (-15 °C) or even colder at the southwestern and at the east – central highlands of the state or rather the Southern Plateau.
Majority of the upstate of the state like the western and the central New York experiences lake – effect snows which are usually the result of its high annual snowfall of the regions. The metropolitan area of New York City has a milder winter season and is remarkably shorter than the rest of the state.
Its summer season has a cool climate. The metropolitan area and the lower portions of the state experience a warm summer climate with some episodes of high and a bit uncomfortable humidity. The rest of the state enjoys a pleasant warm summer with an occasional sultry condition. Its average summer temperature would range from upper 70s to mid 80s °F or 25 to 30 °C. All in all, the state offers a more favorable environment for those who are looking for outdoor activities, those athletic individuals and those that are looking for more recreational activities.

Culture
The culture of the state of New York is shaped by the centuries of immigrations, the size and the variety of people within the state.
